Abstract:
I will give two short talks about the application of machine
learning to products at Microsoft.
The first talk will describe our work on the RoundTable
teleconferencing device. RoundTable replaces a conventional
multi-microphone audio conferencing phone. In addition, RoundTable
captures 360 degree panoramic images of the participants. Users
have two options for remote participation: view the entire panorama
at low resolution or view higher resolution video of just the
current speaker. I will describe the algorithms used to detect the
people in the conference room and which is the current speaker.

The second talk will describe our efforts to improve the web
browsing experience (and cell phone experience, etc) using
algorithms that extract information from semi-structured text data.
Information extraction (IE) is a well established academic
discipline. We have applied these ideas to commonplace web browsing
scenarios, such as mapping the addresses on a web page (perhaps a
list of restaurants that a blogger enjoys in Toronto). The Windows
Live Toolbar now includes technology to extract address and contact
information from web pages. We are working with the web search
team, the cell phone team, and Microsoft Office.
